Interpretation of Results.

If the student's English is not adequate, they should be recommended to follow an English course before they start their academic course. In some cases it might be appropriate for students to study English at the same time as their academic course.

a. Pre-sessional English classes.

For applicants to the university

One possibility is for applicants to follow a full time (20 hours per week +) EAP (English for Academic Purposes) course before starting their main course. Many universities run English courses from October every year to the end of the following September. The summer courses are normally called Pre-Sessional English courses. The purpose of the courses is to prepare students to cope with the linguistic and related study-skill demands of their subsequent course. If applicants to the University do not have adequate English, they may be required to follow one of these courses. In this case the following periods of English study are recommended.

b. In-sessional English classes.

For students at the university

Most UK universities offer academic English classes during the academic year to full-time students. These classes are usually held on Wednesday afternoons, at lunch times and in the evenings. They deal with specific topics, e.g. academic writing, seminar skills etc. We recommend the following hours of English studies per week per year.
